Patients are admitted under the care of the orthopaedic surgeon (in the referring hospital) provided they can benefit from the services of the hospital and are deemed to be sufficiently medically fit to be cared for at the hospital.

  • 80 Orthopaedic care beds are available to the region.
  • 80  Interim care beds are available to the Mater Hospital
    Beaumont Hospital, and Connolly Memorial Hospital.


Swan, Kincora, Blackheath and Gracefield wards all have five 6 bedded rooms and two single rooms. the Vernon ward has 5 six-bedded rooms and 4 single rooms. Each ward has access to a day room with television, and nurse call facilities.

Patients' Private Property, Cash and Valuables

Patients are advised not to bring more than a small amount of money for personal purchases. If valuables or cash are brought to the Hospital and cannot be given to a relative or friend to hold for you, they should be handed over to the ward sister for safe keeping during your stay in hospital. An itemised receipt will be provided to you from the accounts office. This receipt must be retained by the patient until these items are reclaimed. Please note that cash and valuables can be collected at any time between 9.00am and 5.00pm Monday to Friday except lunchtime 1pm to 2pm. Please ask for your cash and/or valuables in advance if you are being discharged outside of the above times. The hospital cannot accept any responsibility for any valuables, money or other articles that you may have in your possession while in hospital.


Newspapers, magazines, fruit, sweets tea, Coffee etc. are sold in the shop and on the wards each morning.


The hairdresser visits twice weekly and a barber can also be arranged. Please ask staff for details.


Visiting Hours

In the best interests of patients, our visiting hours are:
2pm - 4.00pm and 6.30pm - 8.30.pm

protected MEALtimeS - no visiting during mealtimes

Meals are served daily, as follows:
Breakfast 7.00am - 8.00am
Mid-morning snack 11.00am
Dinner 12.00pm - 1.00pm
Evening Meal  4.30pm -5.30pm

Car Parking

There is adequate space for cars in the Hospital grounds but we ask visitors not to obstruct emergency exits or ambulance access routes. Cars are parked at the owner's risk.


To allow us prepare for the next patient, it is necessary for beds to be vacated by 11.00am on the morning of discharge. For patients who are to be collected by relatives, the ward sister will be happy to make the necessary arrangements with them. If you cannot be collected until later than 11.00am, you will be welcome to use our sitting areas and every effort will be made to ensure your comfort.

On discharge, please check with your nurse that:

  • all prescriptions for medications are up-to-date and fully understood.
  • you confirm the date and time of your next appointment.
  • you have all your personal belongings with you.

You should be aware that the hospital is unable to supply medications on discharge. In addition to the service provided by our own medical staff, patients will also receive weekly visits by medical staff of the hospital from which they were transferred.
